STAMM THROWS FIVE-HIT GEM IN OWLS 2-1 WIN AGAINST XAVIER

5.17.02 | Baseball

Freshman Bryan Stamm retired the final 15 batters he faced, throwing only 91 pitches in his first complete game as the Owls eliminated the Xavier Musketeers, 2-1, from the 2002 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship.

Stamm (3-3) was jump untouchable from from the fifth inning on as the Owls moved on to play St. Bonaventure tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in an elimination game.

The Owls scored their only two runs of the game off starter and loser Jarret Sues (7-5) in the opening inning. Back-to-back leadoff singles by Joe Lyall (Levittown, PA/Harry Truman) and Keith Ramsey (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) to start the game got the Owls going. After a pair stole second and third, Sues struck out the next two batters and appeared to be on the verge of getting out of the inning when Jeff Roma (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) came through with a big two-out single.

After breezing through the first three innings facing the minimum number of batters, Stamm (Mifflinburg, Pa/Mifflinburg) was touched up for a run in the fourth. But it could have been worse. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases with no outs. After a force out at home for the first out, Eric Armstrong grounded into a fieldeer's choice to score a run. Then, with runners on first and third, the Musketeers tried a double-steal and the Owls nailed Jay Johnson at the plate for the final out of the inning, leaving the Owls up 2-1.

Neith team could muster anything as Stamm retired the final 15 batters as the Owls bench erupted with the final out.

For the Owls, freshman Mike Weckenman (Newtown, Pa/Council Rock) went three-for-three and is now six-for-eight in the tournament.

Once again, the Owls will take on St. Bonaventure tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
