OWLS SEASON ENDS WITH 5-2 LOSS TO ST. BONAVENTURE
5.18.02 | Baseball
Starter and loser Brandon Bruno (5-7) gave the Owls a solid effort but allowed all five of the Bonnies runs to cross home plate with two outs, as the Owls could generate little offense against Solveson.
After Bruno got out of a bases loaded two-out jam in the top of the second, the Owls took their first and only lead of the evening scoring a pair of runs in the second. With one out, catcher Jeff Roma (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) walked and went to second on a single by Sam Sabolchick (Hazelton, Pa/Hazelton Area) to left. The Owls then played hit-and-run as Fred Hilliard (Upper Darby, Pa/Upper Darby) drilled a single to right center as Roma scored and third base coach, John McArdle, didn't hesitate in sending Sabolchick, who just beat the throw home, giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.
The Owls lead was short lived however, as the Bonnies put together four singles to take a 3-2 lead in the top half of the fourth inning. The big hit was a two-out two-run single by third baseman Mike Tegeler.
Meanwhile, Bonnies starter Saul Solveson retired 11 in a row until a one-out single by senior Joe Lyall (Levittown, Pa/Harry Truman). Keith Ramsey (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) followed with a walk but Solveson retired the next two Owls keeping the lead at one.
Bruno continued to wiggle out of jams, stranding two runners in the seventh but the Bonnies finally pushed across a run in the eighth. With two men out, Mike Sedor singled, stole second and scored on a double to left center by Kevin Ryan.
The Owls mounted a threat in the bottom half of the inning but could not score. A Lyall single to center was followed by a walk to Ramsey. Solveson then got out of trouble, striking out John Quigley (Bensalem, Pa/Bensalem) and retiring Al Roach (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) on a fly out to right.
The Bonnies would add their fifth run, again with two outs, in the visitors ninth. Eric Wilson singled and scored on a double by Mike Rapacioli.
For the Owls, senior Joe Lyall finished up his career with two hits, giving him six during the tournament.
The Bonnies now face George Washington tomorrow for the right to travel to Richmond next week to play the Spiders in a two out of three series to determine the Atlantic 10 NCAA representative.
