EIGHT TEMPLE FENCERS REACH SEMIFINALS OF TEMPLE OPEN

PHILADELPHIA -- Eight Temple University women's fencers reached the semifinals in their respective weapons at the 24th annual Temple Open held at McGonigle Hall on November 1. In all, the Owls competed among almost 200 other collegiate fencers from across the country in the women's foil, sabre and epee events. Junior Jeanne Browne, who finished third in foil, senior Aziza Hassan, who finished third in saber and senior Stephanie Sargent, who finished third in epee, led the way for the Owls.

In the women's foil competition, in addition to Browne, sophomore Maryanne Forsythe finished fifth and sophomore Jenna Remmert finished seventh to round out the Temple finalists for foil. Senior Nerita Brumell was a semifinalist and finished ninth while freshman Leigh Adel-Arnold finished 19th. Penn State's Sophia Hiss took first place in the foil competition.

Hassan was the sole finalist for the sabre squad and freshman Lauren Riesebeck was the only semifinalist for the squad, finishing ninth. Junior Nnennaya Okoro and freshman Kaitlyn White rounded out the sabre squad, finishing 20th and 48th, respectively. Penn's Annika Eiremo finished first in the sabre competition.

In the women's epee competition, senior Sara Forsythe joined Sargent as a finalist, finishing fifth. Sophomore Keri Ecker finished 30th and freshman Rachel Eschenbach finished 34th to round out the Owls epee squad. Cornell's Meghan Phair finished first in the epee competition.

The Temple Open continues tomorrow, Nov. 2, with the men's foil, sabre and epee competitions.
