OWLS SEASON OPENER POSTPONED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

2.21.03 | Baseball

Head Coach Skip Wilson's 2003 squad will have to wait a little longer for their season opener to arrive due to inclement weather.

The Owls opener against Lafayette on Saturday, February 22 has been postponed and rescheduled for Thursday, March 27 in Easton. In addition, the Owls scheduled home opener, a doubleheader against La Salle at Erny Field on Sunday, February 23 has also been postponed. The game has been rescheduled as a single game on Tuesday, May 6.

Wilson enters the season with 974 wins, just 26 shy of the coveted 1,000 win plateau. The Owls return six starters from last year's squad that finished second in the A-10 East Division.

The Owls should benefit from the return of first baseman, Rob Cucinotta, who sat out last year because of an injured right leg. Also returing on the infield diamond will be second baseman Fred Hilliard, along with the left side of the diamond in shortstop Jason Connor and third baseman Mike Weckenman.

In the outfield, the Owls return left fielder Al Roach and center fielder John Quigley who returns as the Owls top batter in 2002.

Behind the plate will be workhorse Jeff Roma. He'll handle a solid pitching staff including returning starters Mike Caron, Matt Powell and Bryan Stamm.

The Owls hope to begin the season on Tuesday, February 25 with a road game scheduled at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.
