3.11.03 | Baseball
The Golden Eagles (12-4), after trailing 2-0 after the Owls batted in the visitors first, sent 17 batters to the plate in the opening frame while knocking out loser Bryan Stamm (0-1) (Mifflinburg, Pa/Mifflinburg) and reliever Tim Foulkrod (Cheltenham, Pa/Cheltenham) while scoring 11 runs off the Owls first two pitchers.
Second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir and left fielder Jeff Cook led the onslaught with four hits each. For the Owls (0-7), first baseman Rob Cucinotta (Drexel Hill, Pa/Monsignor Bonner) had four hits while center fielder John Quigley (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) had a pair of hits, including a double and home run with four runs batted in.
Southern Mississippi added seven runs in the home third to salt away the victory. It was the first time all season that Owl pitchers were knocked around although freshman Tim Andrel (Upper Darby, Pa/Upper Darby) came in to pitch two scoreless innings in the last two frames for Temple after relieving another freshman, Eric Filson (Folsom, Pa/Ridley).
The Owls will try to salvage a split in the two-game series when they take on the Golden Eagles again on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. in Hattiesburg.
