BASEBALL DROPS 3-0 DECISION AGAINST NORTHWESTERN AS RAIN SUBSIDES

3.2.03 | Baseball

The game was originally postponed but as the rain subsided, the Owls coaching staff went off in a scurrying rush to find all its players. Once the mission was accomplished, the Owls left the hotel to take on Northwestern in a seven-inning affair at the Wiregrass Classic. Unfortunately, the Owls did leave something behind, their hitting shoes.

J.A. Happ and reliever Jon Mikrut combined to limit Temple to three hits as Northwestern (6-1) handed the Owls a 3-0 setback.

Temple (0-2) got a strong pitching effort from senior Brian Ursone (Collingdale, Pa/Monsignor Bonner). Ursone (0-1) himself gave up just four hits in pitching a complete game. First baseman Rob Cucinotta (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) had two of the three hits for Temple.

With the Owls trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Northwestern added a pair of runs on a two-out single by designated hitter Mark Ori to up the Wildcats lead to 3-0.

Only twice did an Owl reach third base. In the second, junior Al Roach (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. In the seventh, Roach led off with a triple to left center but was once again stranded.

Up next, the Owls finish up its trip in Alabama with a 1:00 p.m. game against host Troy State.
