BASEBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO NATIONALLY RANKED RICHMOND

Temple right-hander Matt Powell (Holland, Pa/Council Rock) and Richmond right-hander Tim Stauffer were hooked a in a pitchers battle throughout the first game. Powell (0-4), went the distance for the Owls and was touched up for three runs in the home fourth that gave the Spiders a 3-1 lead. Stauffer (4-0), a likely first round draft pick in the upcoming June draft, struck out 14 Temple batters and seemingly had the game in control until the Owls last at bat.
Center fielder John Quigley (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem), the Owls leading batter, singled to right field and catcher Jeff Roma (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) followed with a two-run home run to tie the score.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Galligan delivered the game-winning home run to left field.
The Owls took a 3-0 lead in the nightcap in the opening frame with the help of two Richmond errors. The Owls got two sacrifice flies off the bats of Al Roach (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and Quigley. The third run crossed the plate on a single by Roma.
Richmond came back with a run in the first and took the lead with four runs in the fourth. The big blow was a three-run home run by first baseman Jim Fasano off starter and loser, Mike Caron (1-4) (Yardley, Pa/Pennsbury). Meanwhile, Jason Bolinski (4-0) came on in the third inning and held the Owls scoreless the remainder of the game.
The two teams finish off their three-game series tomorrow in Richmond with a single game beginning at 12 Noon.
