RICHMOND HANDS TEMPLE 16-4 DEFEAT IN GETAWAY GAME
3.23.03 | Baseball
Left fielder Mike Galligan hit a three-run homer against starter and loser Justin Mendek (0-1) (Blackwood, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) in the first inning. The other big shot was another three-run homer in the Spiders' sixth inning by Jim Fasano off Chris Hamilton (Philadelphia, Pa/Germantown), who came on to replace the injured Bryan Stamm (Mifflinburg, Pa/Mifflinburg). Stamm came on in relief but was injured in warm-ups and did not face a batter.
The Owls could muster only six hits on the afternoon while Richmond batters pounded out 16 hits. Temple was led by catcher Jeff Roma (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and designated hitter, Gene Burpoe (Arlington, Va/Wakefield) who had two hits apiece. Second baseman Mike Silverman (Owings Mills, Md/McDonogh) drove in a pair of runs for the losers.
The Owls will take on Villanova on Tuesday afternoon down at Veterans Stadium in the first round of the 2003 Liberty Bell Classic. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. On Wednesday, the Owls will take on Lehigh at Erny Field at 3:00 p.m.
