VILLANOVA POUNDS OUT 15 HITS IN 15-2 WIN OVER TEMPLE AT VILLANOVA BALLPARK ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON
4.22.03 | Baseball
The Wildcats (9-24) were led by Brian Newbold who had four hits and four runs batted in and leadoff batter, Chris Graziano, who had three hits, four runs scored and stole his 100th career base.
Temple (13-18) could muster little offensively against starter and winner, Nick Allen (3-5) and reliever Tom Kandybowicz. The Owls had just six hits on the afternoon.
Villanova wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Temple starter, Bryan Stamm (Mifflinburg, Pa/Mifflinburg) couldn't find the plate in the opening frame as both Graziano and Danny Poydenis reached on walks to start the game. Newbold followed with the first of his three doubles and following another walk to Adrian Schau, head coach Skip Wilson brought Tim Brown (Newtown Square, Pa/St. Joe Prep) on in relief. Brown allowed a sacrifice fly but got out of the inning with no further damage.
After Villanova upped its lead to 5-0 after three innings, the Owls finally got on the board in the fifth. 'Nova starter Nick Allen retired the first batter but was touched up for a single by Mike Weckenman (Newtown, Pa/Council Rock) and a double by Pete Colon (Birdsboro, Pa/Daniel Boone), putting runners on second and third. A wild pitch scored Weckenman and Colon scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Mike Brown (Philadelphia, Pa/Chestnut Hill Academy) to pull the Owls to within 5-2.
The Wildcats would get those back and a whole bunch more, scoring three times in each the fifth and sixth innings and adding a four-spot in the home seventh.
The Owls could generate little offense the rest of the way, getting just one hit in the final four innings, that being a long double to center off the bat of Mike Brown.
The Owls travel down to Newark, Delaware on Wednesday to take on the University of Delaware in a 3:00 p.m. start.
