OWLS HIT SIX HOME RUNS IN DEFEATING ARMY, 23-7

4.29.03 | Baseball

The Temple Owls hit a season-high six home runs and pounded out a season-high 22 hits in defeating Army, 23-7, at Doubleday Field in West Point, New York on Tuesday afternoon. The win gave head coach Skip Wilson his 991st career victory, all in an Owl uniform.

The Owls (17-19) onslaught was led by first baseman, Rob Cucinotta (Drexel Hill, Pa/Monsignor Bonnor), who hit his seventh and eighth home runs of the year and 28th and 29th of his career, moving him into second place on Temple's all-time home run hitting list. Cucinotta moved ahead of Mike Palys, who played for the Owls from 1986-89 and hit 27 career home runs. He is now one shy of tying Bobby Higginson (1989, 1991-92), who hit 30 home runs during his career.

John Quigley (Bensalem, Pa/Bensalem) hit his team-leading 12th and 13th home runs as the Owls raced out to a quick 8-3 lead before Army (15-22-1) cut the deficit to 8-7 heading into the top of the sixth. The Owls went on to score three runs in the sixth and seven runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Freshman Matt Lawless (Havertown, Pa/Haverford) (1-0) got the win for the Owls. Tim Brown (Havertown, Pa/Haverford) came in to pitch five innings of relief to pick up his first save of the season and his first career save.

The Owls return home tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. game against the Delaware Blue Hens at Erny Field.
