ANDREL AND CARON TEAM UP TO GIVE TEMPLE AN 8-6 VICTORY OVER VISITING DELAWARE
4.30.03 | Baseball
Andrel (1-0) was the victim of some shaky fielding in the first inning, but settled down and gave Skip Wilson a solid 6.1 innings pitched before being relieved by Mike Caron, who picked up his first save of the season.
After Delaware 15-29) scored three runs in the top of the first, the Owls broke right back.
With one out, Jason Connor (Norristown, Pa/Kennedy Kendrick) doubled and moved to third on a single by Rob Cucinotta (Drexel Hill, Pa/Monsignor Bonnor). Following a fielders choice that scored Connor, center fielder John Quigley (Bensalem, Pa/Bensalem) hit his third home run in two days, this one a two-run homer to tie the game. Catcher Jeff Roma (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) followed with a solo homer to give the Owls the lead.
Delaware would plate another unearned run in the second but the Owls would get that back and one more on a two-out two-run double to left center by Connor.
Andrel settled down and retired 10 straight Blue Hens through the sixth inning. The Owls, in the meantime, would add another run without the benefit of a hit in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead while knocking out starter and eventual loser, Joe Coudon (1-2).
In the visitors seventh, Kris Dufner hit a one-out solo home run to knock Andrel out and Steve Harden greeted reliever Mike Caron with a long home run to left to cut the lead to 7-6. Caron would get out of the inning without any further damage by retiring the Blue Hens on two ground outs.
But once again in the bottom of the inning the Owls would get a run back. A couple of walks off reliever Jason Vincent and a big two-out single by Weckenman would plate the eighth and final run of the game for the Owls.
Caron would then work a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick of his first save of the season and make a winner out of Andrel for the first time in his collegiate career.
The Owls continue play at home tomorrow when they take on the Villanova Wildcats at 3:30 p.m.
