CUCINOTTA TIES TEMPLE HOME RUN CAREER MARK

5.4.03 | Baseball

Temple first baseman Rob Cucinotta hit his record-tying 30th career home run today in Temple's 4-1 Atlantic 10 Conference win over Fordham at Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx, New York.

His ninth home run of the season, a first-inning solo shot hit off Fordham starter, Craig Tscherednikov, tied Cucinotta with former Temple and current Detroit Tiger, Bobby Higginson, who played for the Owls in 1989 and again in 1991 and 1992.

Cucinotta hit nine home runs during the 2000 season and 12 during the 2001 season. He sat out last year as a redshirt. Cucinotta, who had three hits in the Owls victory over Fordham, now has 223 career hits and trails Temple's all-time hit leader, Bob Filler, by 11. Filler had 234 career hits during his career (1998-01).

Cucinotta is currently second in batting on the Owls, hitting .351 (53-for-151). He also has a .596 slugging percentage, which is also second on head coach Skip Wilson's ballclub.

The Owls are 19-22 overall after starting the season 0-10. They enter the last week of the regular season with a 9-9 Atlantic 10 Conference record and finish up their conference schedule this Friday and Saturday when they play the eastern division leading, Rhode Island Rams, up at Erny Field. The two teams will play a single game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and complete the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
