SENIOR ROB CUCINOTTA BREAKS TEMPLE CAREER HOME RUN MARK

5.7.03 | Baseball

Temple first baseman Rob Cucinotta hit his record-breaking 31st career home run today in Temple's 7-3 Atlantic 10 Conference loss in the second game of a doubleheader against George Washington at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia.

With his 10th home run of the season, a first-inning two-run shot off George Washington starter, Josh Wilkie, Cucinotta passed former Temple and current Detroit Tiger, Bobby Higginson, who played for the Owls in 1989 and again in 1991 and 1992. Higginson hit 30 career home runs for the Owls.

Cucinotta hit nine home runs during the 2000 season and 12 during the 2001 season. He sat out last year as a redshirt. Cucinotta, who had three hits in the doubleheader against George Washington, now has 227 career hits and trails Temple's all-time hit leader, Bob Filler, by seven. Filler had 234 career hits during his career (1998-01).

Cucinotta is currently second in batting on the Owls, hitting .356 (57-for-160). He also has a .606 slugging percentage, which is also second on head coach Skip Wilson's ballclub.

The Owls are 19-25 overall after starting the season 0-10. They finish up their conference schedule this Friday and Saturday when they play the eastern division leading Rhode Island Rams at Erny Field. The two teams will play a single game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and complete the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
