GREG POWELL CONTINUES TO SHINE IN HOUSTON ASTROS ORGANIZATION

7.30.03 | Baseball

Former Temple standout, Greg Powell, continues to climb up the Houston Astros organization. The right-handed pitcher is now playing for the Round Rock Express, the double AA affiliate of the Astros.

Powell is only one of three pitchers who has tossed over 100 innings. He currently sports a 5-7 record with an earned run average of 3.92. The Express is currently 39-75.

The former Owl signed a free-agent contract with the Houston Astros organization in 2001 after going 4-2 with a 3.09 earned run average for the River City Rascals of the Frontier League.

The Holland, Pennsylvania native led the Owls to the NCAA Tournament in 2001. In his senior year, Powell was simply dominating during Atlantic 10 Conference play. He was 7-1 while allowing just 16 earned runs in 66.0 innings pitched.

Powell finished his Temple career with a 22-26 record with 15 complete games. He still holds the individual record for most starts in a season with 17 in 2001 and ranks fifth on the Owls all-time list for most wins (22) and is seventh in strikeouts with 214.
