VOLLEYBALL: OWLS SHUTOUT EXPLORERS, 3-0 IN ATLANTIC 10 OPENER

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple volleyball team used an efficient offense and solid defense to defeat La Salle in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday night at the Tom Gola Arena. The game scores were 30-11, 30-21 and 30-15 as the 2002 Atlantic 10 champions began their title defense with a conference shutout.

Senior outside hitter Liu Shu led the Owls with a match-high 10 kills while hitting .412 and added 12 digs for a double-double. Fellow senior Yamit Haba had nine kills and 14 digs while sophomore Stephanie Buynovsky added eight kills and hit .500. Junior setter Alison Runk had a match-high 38 assists for Temple.

Robyn Wright and Kristen Kelsey led La Salle with seven kills apiece. Setter Caitlin Conner had 19 assists for the Explorers.

Temple hit .350 for the match while La Salle managed to hit .038.

The Owls (4-6, 1-0 A-10) will travel to Ohio for their next two matches where they will face Xavier on Friday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. and Dayton on Saturday, October 4 at 5:00 p.m.

La Salle falls to 7-11 overall and 0-1 in A-10 play.
