VOLLEYBALL SENIORS HAVE THEIR WAY WITH DUQUESNE, 3-0

10.30.04 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA -- Seniors Alison Runk, Laura Leis and Jill Fetrow were honored before their final home game at McGonigle Hall, but the Owl trio waited until after sweeping Duquesne in three straight games to do their celebrating.  The game scores in the match were 30-28, 30-26 and 30-14.

Runk, the most celebrated of the Owl senior contingent, displayed her all around floor game in leading the Cherry and White to their fifth straight Atlantic 10 Conference win.  The 5-9 setter from Lititz, Pa. recorded a match-high 49 assists while sneaking in six kills.

"Just me as a person, I have matured a lot," stated Runk, the two-time A-10 Setter of the Year on her time at Temple. "Coming in as a freshman my skills have improved 10 times over so I give a lot of credit to Coach and my teammates to realize my potential and mature as a volleyball player."

Leis, who has had a solid senior season for head coach Bob Bertucci, had a strong defensive game with 15 digs in the contest.  She also recorded one block solo and two block assists to go along with her three kills.

"It has been a really good experience, the whole four years," said Leis. "I am going to miss my team a lot.  I have seen a lot of girls come and go and it is going to be hard not practicing with them in the spring, but I will definitely come to the games and support them."

A reserve during her two years as a member of the team, Fetrow was inserted in the starting lineup for her final home match. The Leola, Pa. native, playing on a sore ankle, contributed four digs in the contest.

"It was a really good day," said Fetrow. "I love to be on this team.  It is an amazing experience, whether I am on the court or not."

Freshmen Yue Liu and Sun Ying Ling led the way offensively for the Owls with 17 and 14 kills, respectively.  The two Chinese natives were at the heights of their attack games, as Ling compiled a .435 hitting percentage with Liu not far behind at .419.

Senior Zhen Jia Liu, who has another season of eligibility, also reached double figures in kills (10) for the Owls.

Junior Stephanie Hopkins and sophomore Amanda Haeg led Duquesne with 13 kills each while freshman setter Kristin Garnett dished 32 assists.

As a team, Temple posted a .301 hitting percentage, staying above 29 percent in each of the three games.  Duquesne, which gave Temple a run in the first two games, hit a dismal -.091 in the final game.  For the match, the Dukes hit a mere .099.

Temple, 11-14 overall and 8-1 in Atlantic 10 play, now must play their remaining five matches on the road.  The Owls will travel to Ohio next weekend to take on Xavier (11/5, 7:00 p.m.) and Dayton (11/6, 4:00 p.m.).

Duquesne, which hosts the A-10 Tournament (11/19-20), falls to 12-14, 4-6 in conference play.
