TEMPLE EXTENDS UNDEFEATED STREAK

2.8.04 | Women's Fencing

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Temple women's fencing team went undefeated for the third week in a row, sweeping the Duke Invitational meet on Saturday, February 8. The Owls went 5-0 on the day, defeating UNC 15-12, MIT 14-13, Brandeis 15-12, Duke 16-11 and Johns Hopkins 21-6.

The 5-0 win is a bit deceptive. The Owls were trailing Brandeis before coming back to beat the Judges 15-12. Temple also trailed MIT 8-13 with three rounds of foil left. To beat MIT, the team needed the foil squad to win six consecutive bouts. The foil squad came through for the team, helping the Owls to defeat MIT 14-13.

The foil squad went 5-0 at the Invitational, helping lead Temple to its undefeated day. Senior Nerita Brumell won 10 bouts and dropped three while junior Jeanne Browne and sophomore Jenna Remmert finished the day at 10-1 and 12-2 respectively.

Senior Sara Forsythe paced the epée squad with a record of 12-3 on the day. The epée squad finished with a record of 3-2.

Senior Aziza Hassan led the way for the sabre squad at finshing the day with a record of 11-4. The sabre squad finished the day at 2-3.

The Owls next take on Cornell, Penn State, Columbia and St. John's on Sunday, February 22 at Cornell beginning at 9 a.m.
