TEMPLE DEFENDS ITS NIWFA TITLE
3.7.04 | Women's Fencing
TEANECK, N.J. -- Temple took first in two of three weapons at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships on Sunday, March 7, to beat 14 other teams and capture the overall NIWFA title for the seventh year in a row.
In epée action, senior Stephanie Sargent placed first while senior Sara Forsythe finished third to help the squad to a first place finish. Rachel Eschenbach also fenced for the epée squad.
The foil squad also placed first behind the efforts of sophomore Jenna Remmert (1st place) and senior Nerita Brummell (14th place). Maryanne Forsythe and Leigh Adel-Arnold also fenced for the foil squad.
Senior Aziza Hassan paced the sabre squad with her first place finish and sophomore Keri Ecker placed 15th to help the squad to an overall second place finish. Junior Nennaya Okoro also fenced for the sabre squad.
Several Owls were named to the All Conference First Team: Jenna Remmert, Foil, Stephanie Sargent, Epée, Sara Forsythe, Epée, Aziza Hassan, Sabre and Maryanne Forsythe was named to the Second Team.
Additionally, Sara Forsythe was named to the All Academic Team.
The Owls will next compete in the NCAA Regionals on March 13 beginning at 9 a.m.
