DUQUESNE HANDS TEMPLE 17-3 DEFEAT IN GETAWAY GAME

4.10.04 | Baseball

PITTSBURGH, PA - Bob Reifschneider pitched a complete game five-hitter and Andy Gallina hit a pair of home runs as Duquesne erupted for 11 early runs in handing the Temple Owls a 17-3 defeat in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon.

The Dukes (11-11, 4-2) wasted little time jumping on Temple starter and loser, Tim Foulkrod (2-3). Dan Schwartzbauer doubled to lead off the game. After retiring the next two hitters, Foulkrod hit Steve Maiolo and first baseman Andy Gallina followed with the first of his two home runs, giving Duquesne a 3-0 lead.

Temple (14-10, 4-2) plated single runs in the second and third. Pete Colon hit a solo homer in the second and the Owls scored a run in the third without the benefit of a hit. Colon's home run was his sixth of the season and tied him for the team lead with Jason Connor.

The home team erupted for eight runs to put the game out of reach in the third. The Owls would go through three pitchers in the inning as the Dukes took advantage of three walks and six hits. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of Steve Maiolo. Reliever Eric Lovelace struck out second baseman Pete Maripos with the bases loaded for the second out of the inning, but Maiolo delivered the clutch two-out three-run double to make the score 11-2.

Meanwhile, Duquesne starter Bob Reifschneider (2-3) held the Owls scoreless from the fourth through the eighth surrendering a meaningless solo home run by Al Roach, his fifth of the season, in the ninth.

The Owls head home and will take on Rider this Tuesday at Temple's Ambler Field at 3:00 p.m.
