BASEBALL POUNDS OUT 15 HITS IN 16-6 WIN OVER SAINT JOSEPH'S

AMBLER, PA - Senior Al Roach had four hits and drove in three runs to lead a 15-hit attack as the Temple Owls won the getaway game of a three-game series with Saint Joseph's, 16-6, on a rainy afternoon at Ambler Field.

Temple also got three hits from designated hitter Matt Lafferty who was inserted into the starting lineup by head coach Skip Wilson. Third baseman Mike Weckenman had a pair of hits to go along with four RBI's and leadoff batter, John Quigley, also drove in three runs.

The Owls received a complete game effort from Chris Kurtz (4-1) who won his fourth game of the season.

Trailing 3-1 with a steady drizzle coming down, the Owls scored six runs off Hawk loser Al Braun (1-5) in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third and one out, Lafferty singled in one run and following a walk to catcher Mike Brown, Justin Cooper singled in a run as the bases remained full. But that didn't last long as Quigley doubled to score a pair of runs. A sacrifice fly by Freddy Hilliard and an RBI double by Roach finished out the six-run inning.

The Owls (17-15, 6-6) put the game away with four runs in the home sixth. Back-to-back singles by Hilliard and Roach started the uprising. After Pete Colon was hit by a pitch by reliever Mike McCollum, Weckenman cleared the bases with a three-run double. A perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Brown scored the final run as the Hawks (9-34, 3-12) found themselves trailing 13-4.

Kurtz was touched up by solo home runs off the bats of Ryan Stadanlick in the eighth and Greg Mason in the ninth.

The Atlantic 10 victory moved the Owls into a third place tie in the eastern division with St. Bonaveture who was no-hit on Sunday morning by Rhode Island's Zach Zuercher. Fordham, who swept a three-game series at Massachusetts, moved into second place with an 8-7 record behind division leading Rhode Island (13-2).

The Owls will travel to West Point, New York to take on the Cadets of Army on Tuesday afternoon before returning home on Wednesday to take on the Villanova Wildcats.
