4.28.04 | Baseball
Temple starter and loser Tim Andrel (1-4) could not find his control in the opening frame. Second baseman Craig Mirsky began the uprising with a walk. Following an infield single, Andrel hit the following two batters to put the Wildcats (24-16-1) up 1-0. A sacrifice fly by Adrian Schau made it 2-0. Another hit batter reloaded the bases and shortstop Brian Trotta knocked in a run hitting into a fielders choice. Back-to-back singles by Jim Gillin and Darren Griffith closed out the scoring in the opening frame.
Temple (17-16) came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Center fielder John Quigley singled and went to third on the first of two doubles by Roach. Jason Connor scored Quigley on an infield single and Roach came in on a sacrifice fly by Pete Colon.
'Nova starter Dan Forino pitched a scoreless second and third innings before two Wildcat relievers held the Owls to just one run and four hits over the final six innings. Joe McCoy (1-1), who got the win, pitched four innings allowing just a run on three hits and lefty Jake Wolff pitched two scoreless innings to close things out.
In the defeat, two Temple players reached milestones. Shortstop Jason Connor recorded his 100th career hit in an Owls' uniform with his first inning RBI single and Al Roach, who had three extra base hits, knocked in his 100th career RBI with a long solo home run in the seventh.
Temple will return to Atlantic 10 Conference play traveling up to Olean, New York this weekend for a big three-game series with St. Bonaventure. The Owls and Bonnies are currently tied for third place in the eastern division with 6-6 records.
The two teams will lock horns on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon and follow that up with a single contest on Sunday.
