DELAWARE ENDS TEMPLE BASEBALL SEVEN-GAME WINNING STREAK WITH 9-2 WIN
4.7.04 | Baseball
Delaware received a strong pitching performance from starter and winner Jarame Beaupre (3-1) and two relievers in holding Temple to its lowest hit total of the season. The Owls managed just three hits.
It was a game that began with the teams seemingly going in two different directions. The Owls came into the game riding a seven-game winning streak while the Blue Hens had dropped 10 games in a row. But the game was anything but that.
Delaware (14-14) got on the board first with three runs in the second. Kelly Buber and Ed McDonnell led off with singles. Temple starter and loser, Tim Andrel (0-3), got the next two batters and looked to be out of the inning. However, Todd Davison hitting in the ninth position, singled in a run and center fielder Brent Rogers then drove a long drive over the out-stretched glove of John Quigley for a two-run triple staking the Blue Hens to a 3-0 lead.
The home squad would double their lead with three more runs in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Steve Van Note was hit by a pitch and Dave Harden lifted a fly to right. Owl right fielder Pete Colon slipped on the wet outfield as the Blue Hens put runners on second and third with no outs. Buber followed with a triple down the right field line to score a pair of runs and scored on a passed ball.
Meanwhile, the Owls (13-8) could muster little against Beaupre. Hitless, going into the fourth, the Owls put runners on second and third with two outs without the benefit of a hit but left the runners stranded as Jason Connor was called out on strikes.
Temple finally got their first hit of the game and a pair of runs in the fifth. Colon doubled to left center to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a ground out. Freddy Hilliard was hit by a pitch and reached second, with Colon scoring, as Mike Brown struck out swinging and catcher Brian Valichka's throw to second attempting to get Hilliard stealing was mishandled. Justin Cooper followed with an RBI single.
The Blue Hens would plate three more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. A leadoff single and second triple of the game by Rogers knocked out Andrel. With Josiah Platchek on in relief, Rogers scored on a groundout. Van Note homered to right center to close out the scoring.
The Owls head west to Pittsburgh and get back into conference play beginning with a doubleheader on Friday against Duquesne. First pitch is slated for Noon. The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a nine-inning affair on Saturday.
