OLEAN, N.Y. - St. Bonventure won a 3-2 nail-biter in the opener and took the nightcap, 8-6, to sweep a doubleheader from Temple on Saturday afternoon in Olean, New York.

Soren Johnson (1-2) held the Owls to just four hits in the opener and Brian Pelligrini picked up saves in both games as the Bonnies (18-17, 8-6) looked to maintain second place in the eastern division of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Temple (17-18, 6-8) took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame of the doubleheader. With one out, center fielder John Quigley knocked in Freddy Hilliard who had reached base on a hit batter, with a single to left.

St. Bonaventure would score their only runs of the game off Temple starter and loser, Tim Foulkrod (3-5), in the second. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly and two-run double by Joe Rizzo gave the Bonnies a 3-1 lead.

Third baseman Mike Weckeman hit his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot, in the third to bring the Owls to within 3-2.

But pitching took over from there. Neither team would mount a serious threat until the Temple seventh. With one out, Jason Adamek reached on an error and stole second. Following a line out, Brian Pelligrini came on in relief of Johnson. Hilliard walked to put runners on first and second but Weckenman popped out to end the game.

In the nightcap, St. Bonventure took a 6-2 lead into the fifth before the Owls mounted a comeback.

With two on and one out, Quigley doubled to score one run and put runners on second and third. Sean Bruet came on for starter and eventual winner Michael Proctor (2-2). Jason Connor singled in a run and the final run scored when Quigley scored on a balk.

St. Bonaventure would score runs in the fifth and the sixth while the Owls pushed a run across in the visitors sixth to end the scoring on the afternoon.

The two teams, weather permitting, will complete their three-game series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at McGraw-Jennings Field.
