LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Temple turned three double plays in the first five innings and received clutch relief pitching from Justin Mendek to defeat Rider, 7-2, on a warm afternoon in Lawrenceville.
The Owls (20-22) got six solid innings from starter Tim Andrel and three scoreless and hitless innings from Justin Mendek who relieved Rob Licata who came on to open the seventh against the Broncs (18-25).
At the plate, Temple's Pete Colon and John Quigley knocked in a pair of runs each.
The Owls got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first against loser Ty Moore. Justin Cooper led off with a single. One out later, Jason Connor was hit by a pitch. Al Roach walked to load the bases and Colon plated a pair of runs with a single to left.
The visitors doubled their lead in the fourth. Connor led off the inning with a single, stole second and went to third on an throwing error by catcher Sean Whalen. Roach walked and Quigley knocked in the first of his two RBI's with a groundout with Roach advancing to second. Following a wild pitch and a walk to Freddy Hilliard, the Owls attempted a double steal as Roach stole home although Hilliard was tagged out in a rundown.
Meanwhile, Andrel (2-4) was the benefactor of three double plays in the first five innings and escaped a scoreless third inning by leaving the bases loaded.
Licata relieved Andrel to start the seventh with the Owls up, 5-1. Following two walks and a single to load the bases with nobody out, head coach Skip Wilson summoned Mendek to the mound. Designated hitter Tom Letizia knocked in a run on a fielder's choice but Mendek retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Temple would add a pair of runs in the final frame while Mendek retired Rider in order in the eighth and ninth innings to pick up his second save.
The two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Temple's Ambler Field.
