AMBLER, PA - A late game comeback and some missed scoring opportunities came back to bite the Owls in an 8-5 loss at the hands of the Fordham Rams at Ambler Field on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
Depending the outcome of the George Washington - Duquesne Sunday doubleheader, the Owls hopes of heading to Norwich, Connecticut might have ended.
Pete Colon and Jason Adamek had two hits apiece for Temple and Marc Wagner drove in a pair of runs with a big two-two single as the OWls battled back in the eighth inning.
With the game scoreless, the Owls (21-25, 8-13) mounted a threat in the second inning. Colon doubled with one out and moved to third on a single by John Quigley. Fordham starter and winning pitcher, John Baco (6-3), got out of the inning by inducing third baseman Mike Weckenman to hit into an inning-ending double play.
Fordham then came back with a pair of runs in the third off loser Justin Mendek (2-5). With one out, Drew Adler was hit by a pitch and went to third on a double by Tim Short. Adler scored on a groundout and Kurt Thomas singled in Short.
After missing opportunities to score in the third and fourth, the Owls finally got on the board scoring an unearned run in the fifth. Adamek led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Brown. Justin Cooper grounded innocently to short but Kevin Brush overthrew first as Adamek came around to score.
Fordham would come right back with three runs in the sixth. With one out, Smith singled to center. Thomas then hit a lazy fly ball to center that Quigley misplayed into a single. The defensive lapse looked to unnerve Mendek who then gave up three consecutive hits to give the Rams (24-25-1, 13-11) a 5-1 lead.
Both teams plated a run in the seventh inning. Brian Keeney, who would later make the defensive play of the game, homered to lead off the inning for the Rams while Gene Burpoe scored in the bottom of the inning for Temple on a single by Freddy Hilliard. Following the single by Hilliard, Shingo Mitsumori relieved Baco and ended the inning by striking out Connor.
Temple got back into the game scoring three unearned runs in the eighth but the rally was cut short when right fielder Keeney made a sliding catch of a liner drive hit by Hilliard with runners on first and second.
The Rams would add two insurance runs in the ninth as Mitsumori closed the door by retiring the Owls in order in the ninth.
Tentatively, the Owls are scheduled to take on Xavier this coming Thursday and Friday making up a rained out three-game series earlier in the year. Should the games be played, first pitch on Thursday is set for Noon.
