BONNIES HAND TEMPLE 4-2 LOSS IN GETAWAY GAME
5.2.04 | Baseball
Temple (17-19, 6-9) got two hits each from Freddy Hilliard, John Quigley and Pete Colon in the losing effort.
The Owls got their only two runs of the game in the second inning off starter Nate Cameron (2-1) who blanked the Owls for the final seven innings. With one out, Quigley, Jason Connor and Justin Cooper singled. Cooper's single scored Connor with the first run of the game as Colon went to third. Designated hitter Andrew Clemens knocked in Colon and reached on an infield error. Hilliard then singled to load the bases but Cameron got Mike Weckenman to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Meanwhile, the Bonnies finally got a run off Temple starter Bill Mendek (2-3) in the home third with two outs and nobody on. Eric Wilson walked and was singled to second by Brian Pellegrini. Substitute third baseman Matt Mardeusz singled to center to plate Wilson to make it 2-1.
Mendek breezed through the fourth and fifth innings but the lefty's fielding would be his downfall in the sixth.
Matt Agostinelli was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Catcher Damian Brakeley reached on an infield single. Dan Bratys sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away by Mendek allowing two runs to cross the plate. A Kieran Malone fly to right moved Bratys to third and another fly to right scored the third unearned run of the inning.
The Owls never got a runner past first in the final three innings off Cameron.
Right now, the conference tournament is quickly disappearing on the Owls. They now sit at 6-9 after being swept for the second time in Atlantic 10 play. The Owls lost a three-game series at Rhode Island two weeks ago.
The Owls go out-of-conference on Tuesday and Wednesday. First, Temple will hit the road to take on Bucknell and then travel to Easton, Pa. to take on Lafayette. Next weekend, Temple will take on Massachusetts in Amherst.
