BASEBALL SWEEPS TWINBILL AGAINST VISITING XAVIER

5.20.04 | Baseball

AMBLER, PA - Temple rebounded from committing five errors to come from behind and win 8-5 in the first game and then rode the two-hit shutout effort of righthander Chris Kurtz to win the nightcap 1-0 and sweep a doubleheader from the visiting Xavier Musketeers.

Freddy Hilliard led the Owls in the opener with three hits and a pair of runs batted in. Shortstop Jason Connor added to his team-leading RBI total by driving in a pair of runs along with John Quigley.

In the nightcap, junior Chris Kurtz carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before settling on a two-hit shutout. It was the first shutout of the season for both Kurtz and the Owls pitching staff.

In the opener, Temple (23-25, 10-13) took a 2-0 lead before starting pitcher and eventual winner, Tim Foulkrod (4-6) was victimized by two infield errors as the Musketeers (15-38, 6-17) scored four unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead in the third inning.

Temple came back to score six runs in the home fourth to take a lead they would never relinquish. With one out, Mike Weckenman and Nick Fasano singled to inginte the rally off starter and loser Bill Konecny (5-12). The Owls looked to run themselves out of the inning when Weckenman was gunned down at third in an attempted double steal.

However, back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Hilliard delivered a single to knock in a pair of runs. Connor then singled in a pair of teammates and Al Roach followed with a walk. Tim Beaver then come on in relief of Konecny and Pete Colon reached on an error loading the bases. Quigley then followed with a single to right to cap off the six-run uprising.

Xavier looked to make some noise in the fifth as Alec Moss and Sean Brewer led off with singles. Josiah Platchek came on in relief and got Drew Roberts to pop out and Jason Morelli to hit into an inning-ending doubleplay.

The Musketeers did score a run off Platchek in the sixth but Tim Andrel came in with the bases loaded and one out and got Moss to ground into a doubleplay to end the threat.

Andrel picked up his first career save by retiring the Musketeers in the seventh.

The nightcap saw the only run cross the plate in the Owls' fourth with the help of a Xavier error.

With two outs, Roach and Colon walked. Quigley followed with a single up the middle. Shortstop Jason Morelli dove and stopped the ball behind second base as third base coach, John McArdle, waved Roach home. The throw bounced through the catcher's legs as Roach slid home safely.

Meanwhile, Kurtz (8-3) was just about untouchable on the mound. He allowed just two Xavier players to reach second base and five to reach overall. Kurtz struck out four and walked just one while throwing just 89 pitches.

The two teams end the three-game series and their season tomorrow with a single game at Ambler Field at 10:00 a.m.
