TEMPLE WOMEN'S FENCING REACHES POSTSEASON FOR 32nd CONSECUTIVE YEAR

The women's fencing team finished the 2003-04 season with a team record of 20-7 and reached postseason play for the 32nd consecutive year. The Owls sent three fencers to the NCAA Championships, held at Brandeis University. The Cherry and White ended the NCAA Championships ranked 12th among women's fencing teams.

The Owls began the season with the 24th annual Temple Open November 1-2 at McGonigle Hall. More than 300 men and women fencers came to Philadelphia to compete in foil, sabre and epée. Seniors Sara Forsythe (epée), Aziza Hassan (sabre) and Stephanie Sargent (epée), junior Jeanne Browne (foil) and sophomores Maryanne Forsythe (foil) and Jenna Remmert (foil) all advanced to the finals of the Temple Open. Maryanne Forsythe, Sara Forsythe, Remmert and Sargent each had their personal-best finishes at the 24th annual Temple Open.

Temple next competed in the Northwestern Multi-Meet finishing the two-day event with a 7-3 record. In the final fencing action of 2003, the Owls traveled to State College, Pa., for the Penn State Open. Sara Forsythe, placing a career-best ninth, and Hassan, matching her Penn State Open effort from last season finishing ninth, were the lone finalists for the Owls.

Temple began the spring semester with back-to-back home meets, starting January 25 against Drew, Fairleigh Dickinson, James Madison and Rugters. Temple went undefeated beating Fairleigh Dickinson (25-2), James Madison (25-2), Drew (23-4) and Rutgers (19-8).
The next weekend, the Owls hosted Haverford, Johns Hopkins and Stevens. Temple remained undefeated in dual meet action, beating Stevens (23-4), Haverford (22-5) and Johns Hopkins (17-10).

Temple took its undefeated record on the road to Durham, N.C., to face Brandeis, Duke, Johns Hopkins, MIT and North Carolina on February 7. The Owls went 5-0 on the day, defeating UNC (15-12), MIT (14-13), Brandeis (15-12), Duke (16-11) and Johns Hopkins (21-6).

In the last dual meet of the regular season, Temple faced Cornell, Penn State, Columbia and St. John's at Cornell. Battling three teams in the top 10, the Owls went 1-4 at Cornell defeating the host 16-11 and dropping the remaining three contests to fifth-ranked Penn (7-20), fourth-ranked Columbia (7-20) and second-ranked Penn State (3-24).

On March 7, Temple set out to defend its team title at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships held at Fairleigh Dickinson. The Owls captured the team title for the seventh year in a row behind the performances of seniors Nerita Brumell (foil), Sara Forsythe (epée), Hassan (sabre) and Sargent (epée), junior Nennaya Okoro (sabre), sophomores Ecker (sabre), Maryanne Forsythe (foil), and Remmert (foil) and freshmen Leigh Adel-Arnold (foil) and Rachel Eschenbach (epée). At the NIWFA Championships, Hassan was crowned the sabre Champion taking first place in the sabre competition and Sargent was crowned the epée Champion taking first place in epée action.

Additionally, four Owls were named to the NIWFA All Conference First Team: Sara Forsythe, Hassan, Remmert and Sargent. Maryanne Forsythe was named to the Second Team and Sara Forsythe was also named to the All Academic Team.

The next weekend, at the Mid-Atlantic South Regional Championships held at Drew, three fencers reached the finals and earned bids into the NCAA Championships. For the second year in a row, Sara Forsythe, Hassan and Remmert represented the Owls at the NCAA Championships. Hassan finished her fencing careers placing 13th at the NCAA Fencing Championships. Remmert ended her sophomore season placing 19th. Forsythe culminated her fencing collegiate career placing 17th at the NCAA Fencing Championships. She was also named the "2004 Temple University Female Student Athlete of the Year," and has been selected as a finalist for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
