MEN'S CREW VARSITY 8 RETAINS DAD VAIL REGATTA TITLE

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple University Men's Varsity 8 took first place (5:55.02) by more than five seconds to capture the Richard O'Brien Trophy for the 15th time in the last 16 years at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday, May 8 on the Schuylkill River. The Varsity 8 qualified for the finals by finishing first (5:43.9) in its semifinal race Saturday morning.

The Owls' Varsity 8 raced in lane three in the finals against Dowling (lane one), Marietta (lane two), Purdue (lane four), Army (lane five) and Grand Valley (lane six). The boat consisted of Mike Fitzpatrick (cox), Kevin Kelly, Marc Stevens, Jon Hanlin, Dave Insogna, Mike Murray, Zach Ben-Dov, Logan Hoffman and Joe Spencer.

Temple's JV 8 also took first place (6:03.39) in the finals on Saturday to win the Ernie Bayer Trophy. The Owls' outdistanced second place Purdue by more than three seconds. The men's JV 8 boat consisted of Carmen Conicelli (cox), Matt Godfrey, TJ Burke, Andy Mantzoukas, Patrick McMahon, Jason Bohot, Brian Campbell, Mike McVeigh and Mike Shisler.

The Owls' Freshman/Novice 4 also advanced to the finals by taking first (6:44.3) in its semifinal race. The Freshman/Novice 4 placed third (6:48.21) in the finals racing in lane two against Bowdoin (lane one), Jacksonville (lane three), Florida Tech (lane four), Colorado (lane five) and Marietta (lane six). The boat consisted of Ryan Flood (cox), Chris Bushek, Matt Hanlin, Dante Cammarata, Tim Malloy. Florida Tech won the men's Freshman/Novice 4 event in a time of 6:39.85.

Temple, which finished third in the overall men's standings at the Dad Vail Regatta behind Purdue and Saint Joseph's, will next compete in the International Rowing Association (IRA)Championships June 3-5 on the Cooper River in Collingswood, N.J.
