PHILADELPHIA - The Temple volleyball team suffered its first loss on it home McGonigle Court and the first in five games, falling 3-2 to the Dayton Flyers on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers ( 15-9, 8-1 A-10), who are currently on a 10 game winning streak, defeated the Owls (14-9, 7-2 A-10) 30-22, 26-30, 19-30, 30-19 and 15-12.
Yue Liu notched a double double with 28 kills and 13 digs, while Zhen Jia Liu had a .409 hitting percentage with 22 kills and just four errors. She added 12 digs. Maira Mogollon dished a match-high 55 assists, while Ying Sun Ling contributed 21 digs as Temple's defensive specialist.
The Flyers took game one 30-22 after jumping out to an early lead. In game two, the teams were neck and neck until the very end. With the score tied at 24, the Owls used a strong second-half push to produce the 30-26 result. Temple returned from the break to dominate game three, hitting .455 to Dayton's .051. With the match and winning streak on the line, the Flyers rebounded to easily defeat Temple 30-19 in game four and force a final fifth game. The Owls got down early, digging themselves into a 3-7 deficit. Refusing to roll over, Temple fought back to tie the score at 11 and then took a 12-11 lead with the next point. The Flyers equalized and scored two final points to take the game 15-12.
Adrienne Green was a standout for the Flyers, earning 28 digs. Faye Barhorst tallied 19 kills and four block solos, while Robynne Green and Kortney Norris earned 17 and 14 kills, respectively. Nicole Schott dished a team high 53 assists and Dayton's setter.
Temple continues its home stand next weekend when it hosts George Washington on Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m. and Charlotte on Saturday, October 29 at 4 p.m.
