11.28.05 | Baseball
PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple baseball team has added perennial national power LSU to its 2006 schedule, first-year head coach Rob Valli announced today. The Owls will open their season on Friday, February 24 with a three-game series against the Tigers, who finished #18 in the national polls in 2005.
The two teams will meet at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CST) and Saturday and Sunday at noon. LSU finished last season with a 40-22 record and hosted a NCAA Regional before being bounced by Rice.
LSU led the nation in baseball attendance for the 10th-straight season according to the 2005 attendance rankings released by the NCAA. The Tigers' 2005 total home attendance of 270,300 was No. 1 in the country, as was the Tigers' average attendance of 7,508 per game (36 games). LSU has finished first in the attendance survey each year since 1996.
LSU is one of only four schools to win five College World Series titles (1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000). Only the Tigers and USC have won four titles in a single decade.
Temple is looking to improve upon its 17-33 record in 2005 and will begin the season on a 10-game road trip. Following the three-game set at LSU, Temple will travel to Hawaii-Hilo for seven games before returning to Ambler Field for the home opener against Lehigh on March 14.
