TEMPLE'S PRESENCE STRONG IN TEMPLE OPEN FINALS

PHILADELPHIA---The fencing strips during the finals at the 26th Annual Temple Open Saturday were filled with Temple fencers. The Cherry and White advanced nine fencers to the finals and 11 to the semi-finals. Freshman Sabrina Shaprio captured the silver. Both senior foilist Jenna Remmert and sophomore epeeist Brianna Ferrara took the bronze in their respective weapons. Sophomore Kristine Jones and freshman Ashlee Phillips tied for 3rd place in the sabre competition.

Four out of five of Temple's foil fencers advanced to the finals and all five advanced to the semi-finals. Freshman Sabrina Shapiro placed 2nd out of 73 entries in her first Temple Open appearance while senior Jenna Remmert followed in 3rd. Freshman Nina Gernes and sophomore Samantha Myles finished 5th and 6th respectively. Rounding out the foil squad's strong performance was senior Maryanne Forsythe who placed 10th reaching the semi-finals. The foil champion was Abby Emerson of UPenn.

Brianna Ferrara led the way for the epee squad with her 3rd place finish. Freshman Melissa Forsythe was also a finalist, placing 6th and sophomore Marla Nacey was a semi-fianlist, placing 11th. Sophomore Ninah Bell and freshman Kailtyn Uckert ended the day 30th and 40th, in that order. Penn State's Andrea Wine won the title of Temple Open's Epee Champion.

Sophomore Kristine Jones and freshman Ashlee Phillips tied for the number three sabre spot. Phillips' 3rd place finish marked her first collegiate final. Senior Keri Ecker ended the day 6th, her first finals finish. Freshman Courtney Morris rounded out the sabre results with a 32nd place finish. Halli Melnitsky of Haverford won the sabre competition.

 

"Overall I'm very happy with our performance as a team," said Coach Brad Baker.

Twenty-eight colleges and universities were represented at the Temple Open with 218 entries in the women's contest alone. Competition continues tomorrow with the men's foil, sabre, and epee competitions.
