PHILADELPHIA -- Greg Chew, who helped lead Gloucester (N.J.) County College to three NJCAA National Championships during his nine-year tenure, has been named assistant coach at Temple, head coach Rob Valli announced today. Chew will serve as the pitching coach and handle third-base coaching duties. A former professional pitcher, Chew mentored ten pitchers that signed pro contracts and four NJCAA All-Americans, including one National Player of the Year.

"Greg was an integral part of our program at Gloucester and a big reason for our success over the years," said Valli.  "His commitment to the pitching staff has allowed our young arms to develop into outstanding college and professional baseball players."

Chew began at GCC in 1997 and led the Roadrunners to the NJCAA College World Series for eight straight seasons from 1998-2005. He coached National Championship teams in 1999, 2000 and 2005.

"Temple athletics and its fans are passionate about their sports teams," Chew said. "I look forward to the challenge of upholding the great tradition of Temple baseball."

Ten pitchers were signed by professional clubs under Chew's guidance, including Mike Flannery, who was placed on the Florida Marlins 40-man roster in January of 2004. Other accolades include four NJCAA All-Americans (Ryan Costello-2000, Tony Casoli-2001, Luca Petrocelli-2002, and Mike Antonini-2005), and one National Player of the Year (Costello).

As a player, Chew posted a 9-1 record as a freshman at Gloucester in 1994 and was drafted in the 42nd round in the Major League Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played two seasons in the Pirates organization before spending time with the Catskill Cougars of the Northeastern Independent League and the Atlantic City Surf of the Atlantic League.

Chew earned his bachelor's degree in health & exercise science at Rowan University in 2001 and currently teaches health and physical education at Washington Township (N.J.) High School.

Temple finished last season with a 17-33 record and 8-16 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Owls open their 2006 campaign on February 24 at LSU.
