OWLS FACE TOUGH COMPETITION IN NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS

PHILADELPHIA -- The 10th ranked Temple women's fencing team faced tough competition on Saturday in its home meet at McGonigle Hall. The three-weapon event featured competition from seven universities (Cornell, Penn State, Columbia, St. John's, Northwestern, Penn, and Temple) of which six are nationally ranked.

The Owls finished the day with an overall record of 1-4. They propelled past Cornell with the foil squad leading the way with its 8-1 win, but lost earlier in the day to #3 Penn State, #5 Columbia, #6 Northwestern and #7 St. John's.

"This meet is highly competitive," coach Brad Baker said. "It's preparation for the national level and shows us what we must work towards."

In epee, freshman Joanna Drews finished 4-9. Freshman Marla Nacey went 3-12 and Brianna Ferrara went 2-9. Aslo a freshman, Ninah Bell finished 1-5.

The foil squad was without senior Jeanne Browne for most of the day after she sustained an injury in the Owl's first match against Penn State. Junior Jenna Remmert stepped up and finished 5-9. Freshman Samantha Myles went 4-6. Junior Maryanne Forsythe and sophomore Leigh Adel-Arnold posted 3-10 and 1-4 marks respectively.

The sabre squad was led by junior Keri Ecker who finished with a 5-4 record on the day. Freshmen Kristine Jones went 4-5 while sophomore Kaitlyn White ended with a 3-6 squad score. Senior Nnenna Okoro and junior Amanda Gerwer went 3-8 and 1-6 respectively.

The women's fencing team will compete next on February 26 in Haverford, Pennsylvania at the NIWFA Championships.
