TEMPLE FENCING CAPTURES NIWFA CHAMPIONSHIP

HAVERFORD, PA--The Temple women's fencing team continued its week of success. On Wednesday the fencing powerhouse improved to ninth in the nation in the United States Fencing Coaches' Association Poll. On Saturday, February 26, after a long day of competing at Haverford College, the Owls walked away as the 2005 National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Champions.

The Owls gave a stellar performance capturing the foil championship as well as the overall team championship. Both the sabre and epee squads impressed with a 2nd place finish in their respective weapon.

Senior Nnenna Okoro led the sabre squad with her 1st place finish. Freshman Kristine Jones also competed in the sabre division. She ended the day 14th and the squad placed 2nd in the sabre championship. Drew University won the event.

Sophomore Leigh Adel-Arnold finished 8th in the foil squad competition. Senior foil teammate Jeanne Browne concluded with a 16th place finish. Adel-Arnold and Browne's combined effort landed the foil squad its NIWFA Foil Championship.

Freshman epee fencer Brianna Ferrara finished 11th. Fellow freshman Ninah Bell finished 13th. The pair captured a 2nd place epee team finish falling short to only Farleigh Dickinson University.

 

Adding to the weekend of accomplishments, senior sabre fencer Nnenna Okoro was named to the NIWFA All-Conference 1st team. Junior foil fencer Maryanne Forsythe was named to the NIWFA All-Acamdemic Team.

The fencing team will look to add to its season of accomplishments as it prepares to compete at the NCAA Regionals Saturday, March 5th.
