BASEBALL FALLS TO RICHMOND, 6-3, IN SERIES FINALE

AMBLER, PA -- Richmond broke open a close game with three runs in the top of the ninth inning and completed the series sweep of Temple with a 6-3 win on Sunday at Ambler Field. The Owl offense continued to struggle and managed only four hits for the day and just one after the second inning. The Cherry and White drop to 7-11 and 0-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond (12-10) remains perfect with a 6-0 conference mark.

Sophomore Chris McCafferty started and gave up two runs in six innings of work, while striking out three. UR plated a run in the first inning on an Andrew Justice RBI double. Temple tied the score in the bottom half of the inning when freshman Tom Dolan beat out an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on an overthrow and scored on a wild pitch.

McCafferty and Richmond starter Stephen Owens were locked in another pitcher's duel, with the teams combining for only one more hit until the seventh inning. The Spiders plated a run in the seventh on a RBI double by Justice and added another off senior Chris Hamilton in the eighth to jump ahead 3-1.

Temple tied the score in the bottom half of the inning without recording a hit. Freshman Frank Nunan walked, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and an error and scored on a wild pitch. Senior Jason Connor also walked and scored all the way from first on a throwing error by the third baseman to tie the score at 3-3.

Freshman Steve Develin came in to pitch the ninth and got two quick outs, the second on a spectacular diving catch by freshman Devon Swope in left. After hitting a batter with a pitch, Develin forced Matt McKenna (3-for-5) to hit a short pop-up in the infield. Unfortunately for the Owls, the blooper fell in between Develin and Connor and short for a base-hit. Alex Hale then provided the back-breaker with a two-run double and UR added an insurance run on a double-steal.

Brian Alas improved to 4-2 with the win and John Cronin nailed down his four save of the season. Develin was saddled with the loss and falls to 1-3.

The Owls return to the diamond on Tuesday in non-conference action against Maryland-Eastern Shore. First pitch is 3 p.m. at Ambler Field.
