MADISON, NJ---Saturday, March 5th, the 9th ranked Temple women's fencing team competed in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships at Drew University. Approximately 30 fencers competed in each weapon. The Owls' foil squad showed great strength. Three of its members moved on to the women's foil finals. The epee squad had one finalist and the sabre squad had one semi-finalist.
Juniors Jenna Remmert and Maryanne Forsythe and senior Jeanne Browne advanced to the foil finals. Remmert placed 6th in the finals. Her finish was the best of the day for the Owls. Forsythe completed Regionals with an 8th place finish. Browne finished 10th. Jackie Leahy of Princeton won the foil championship.
Freshman Brianna Ferrara was the solo epee finalist for Temple. Ferrara finished 10th in her weapon. UPenn's Holly Burchel captured the epee Regional Championship.
Senior Nenna Okoro advanced to the semifinals in the sabre competition. Penn State's Sophie Hiss won the weapon.
On March 8th the NCAA selections will be made to determine the competition for the NCAA Championship held March 17-20 in Houston, Texas. Only six foil fencers, eight sabre fencers, and seven epee fencers will be selected from the Mid-Atlantic/South Region. There will be two additional spots open to all regions. The selection process is based on a 40%/60% combination of season record and regional finish.
