AMBLER, PA -- Rhode Island scored nine unanswered runs beginning in the sixth inning to record an 11-5 come-from-behind victory over Temple in the rubber-match of a three-game Atlantic 10 series. Sophomore Dan Brady went 3-for-4 with a double, homerun and two RBI to pace the Owls' 11-hit attack. The loss spoiled a soild outing from freshman Tom Dolan, who struck out six in 5.2 innings in his first collegiate start.
Rhode Island (15-15, 9-3 A-10) scored in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single by Josh Nestor but TU answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Seniors Justin Cooper and Jason Connor each singled and stole bases to give the hosts second and third with two away. Senior Pete Colon came through with a two-run double to the gap and Brady followed with another two-bagger to plate Colon and give Temple (8-20, 1-8) a 3-1 lead.
Brady slugged his second homerun in as many days in the fourth to give the Owls a three-run cushion. Meanwhile, Dolan began to settle in and stranded runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, including a bases-loaded jam in the fifth. URI did get a lead-off homer from Matt Sullivan (4-for-5) to close the gap to 4-2 in the frame, but Temple responded with a tally in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Harry Ley tripled to the right-center field wall and scored on a Connor RBI-groundout.
The 5-2 lead appeared to look safe as Dolan got the first two outs in the sixth. But Rhody two in the inning and added four in the seventh, two in the eighth and one more in the ninth to take home an 11-5 victory and its 11th straight A-10 series win.
Ley and Connor each had a pair of safeties for Temple. Senior Chris Hamilton (0-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs in two innings.
Steve Holmes (3-1) earned the win, despite giving up five earned runs in six innings. He did fan six batters. URI pounded out 16 hits, including six for extra bases.
Temple returns to the diamond on Tuesday in a non-conference tilt with Bucknell at 3:30 p.m.
