BASEBALL ERUPTS FOR 14-0 WIN OVER SAINT JOSEPH'S
4.23.05 | Baseball
NORRISTOWN, PA -- Temple ripped a season-high 15 hits and received a stellar pitching performance from junior Tim Foulkrod to cruise to a 14-0 Atlantic 10 victory over Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. Sophomore Dan Brady remained hot at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two homers and four RBI while senior Justin Cooper broke out of a slump with a four-hit performance, including two doubles. The nightcap of the doubleheader was suspended by rain in the bottom of the second inning. The two teams will resume the contest on Sunday at noon before playing the scheduled nine-inning game.
A city rival may have been just what the Temple (9-22, 2-8 A-10) offense needed to get going. The Owls have not reached double-digits in a win since an 11-6 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on March 22, but exploded for season-bests in hits and runs. Seniors Pete Colon and Harry Ley also bashed homeruns as nearly half of Temple's 15 hits went for extra bases.
Over the last 10 days, Brady has been as hot as any player in the Atlantic 10, batting .500 with four homeruns and eight RBI. Colon, whose seven dingers have come in the last three weeks, moved into eighth place on the all-time homerun list with 23.
Foulkrod evened his record at 4-4 with a complete-game five hitter. The ace struck out five batters for his first collegiate shutout and first victory since beating Albany on March 19. Only one Hawk (10-25, 5-5) reached as far as second base for the contest.
The Cherry and White exploded for four runs in the first inning of SJU starter Jason Hessler (2-4). Cooper doubled, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher, Colon ripped an RBI single and Brady slammed the first of two homers in the opening frame to put TU ahead 4-0. The Owls added two runs each in the second and third innings, respectively, on two-run blasts from Ley and Brady.
Temple added four runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh to close out the scoring. Colon (2-for-3) and Ley (1-for-3) each drove in three runs.
Game two was suspended in the bottom of the second inning with no score and SJU's Adriano Petrutz at the plate. The game will resume from that spot on Sunday at noon with a nine-inning affair to follow.
