BASEBALL FALLS TO VILLANOVA, 10-3

AMBLER, PA -- Villanova broke open a 3-3 ballgame after five innings with seven unanswered runs to defeat Temple, 10-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Ambler Field. The Owls were hurt by three costly errors and spoiled a solid start from senior Chris Hamilton. Three TU players had a pair of hits, including a single and double from senior Mike Weckenman.
Temple (10-24) got on the board in the second inning on an RBI-groundout by sophomore Dan Brady. Villanova (24-12-2) answered back with two outs in the top of the third, scoring three runs off Hamilton. Jeremy Hunt had a two-run double and Alan Day added an RBI single for the Wildcats in the frame.
The Owls managed to tie the game with two runs in the third with three infield singles. Freshman Tom Dolan beat out a swinging bunt and senior Justin Cooper lined a single to right to give TU first and second with no outs. Senior Harry Ley squared around to sacrifice, but his bunt was in a perfect spot and earned a hit. Senior Jason Connor then beat out a groundball to short for an RBI single that plated Dolan and Weckenman followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.
Freshman Steve Develin replaced Hamilton (5 IP, 3 ER) in the sixth. After a leadoff single, Develin induced two groundouts, but a throwing error by Connor allowed the Wildcats to score two unearned runs in the inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Villanova went on to score another run in the seventh and exploded for four runs in the eighth to coast to victory. Jim Baxter (5-1) pitched six innings and struck out six to earn the win.
Dolan and Ley each had two hits for Temple. Develin (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs in three innings.
The Cherry and White take on Fordham in a three-game Atlantic 10 series beginning on Saturday at noon. First pitch at Ambler Field is set for noon.
