DAYTON, OH -- Temple lost its eighth consecutive game and fifth straight in Atlantic 10 play by dropping a doubleheader at Dayton's Time Warner Cable Stadium on Saturday. The Flyers won the opener, 8-2, and the nightcap, 11-4. Senior Harry Ley made his debut for the Owls in game two, going 3-for-3 with a two-run homerun.

Dayton (19-11, 6-2 A-10) jumped on the board early, taking a 5-0 lead in the first three innings of sophomore pitcher Chris McCafferty. The Owls (7-16, 0-5) added two runs in the fifth as senior Pete Colon, who blasted three homeruns on Wednesday, doubled with one out. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on senior Justin Cooper's RBI groundout. Freshman Tom Dolan then singled in senior Gene Burpoe, who had walked, to make the score 5-2.

The Flyers answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to chase McCafferty (1-4). Freshman Eric Fritz recorded the final five outs without allowing a hit. Colon went 2-for-3 to pace TU offensively.

Craig Stammen picked up the win with a complete-game six-hitter. He struck out six batters and allowed two earned runs to improve to 5-3. Galen Schumm and Michael Massa each had two hits.

The Cherry and White scored two runs in the first inning of the nightcap, but Dayton scored nine runs off Temple starter Mike Weckenman in two frames to coast to victory.

The visitors took advantage of three walks to plate their two runs in the first inning. Cooper, freshman Devon Swope and senior Jason Connor all walked to load the bases with one out. Weckenman then singled to left to score Cooper and Swope and put TU ahead 2-0. Colon then was hit by a pitch to reload the bases but Temple grounded into a double-play to kill the rally.

UD tallied four runs in the second and added five more in the third off Weckenman (0-1). The Flyers took advantage of seven hits, four walks and two wild pitches to take a comfortable 9-2 lead after three innings.

Ley, who transferred from Drexel after the Dragons dropped their program following the 2003 season, made the most of his Temple debut. The senior smacked a two-run homerun in the sixth inning to plate sophomore Dan Brady, who had walked.

Senior Chris Hamilton pitched the final three innings and allowed two runs. Weckenman was 2-for-3 at the plate for TU.

Luke Trubee (7-1) tossed all seven innings and struck out four batters for Dayton. Massa had three hits and drove in three runs to pace the Flyers.

The eight-game losing skid is the longest since Temple opened the 2003 season with 10 straight defeats. The 0-5 Atlantic 10 start is the worst since joining the league in 1983.

The two teams will finish their three-game series on Sunday at noon.
