TEMPLE MEN TIE FOR THIRD IN POINTS AT THE 67TH DAD VAIL REGATTA

5.14.05 | Men's Crew

A young Temple men's Varsity Eight fought gallantly on the Schuylkill River Saturday afternoon, but was unable to defend its Dad Vail Title, finishing fourth in a race the program has owned for nearly two decades.  Head coach Gavin White's charges did salvage the day by tying with Michigan for third place in the men's overall standings.

"I was very proud of the boys when they came through the bridge first," stated White in reference to his team's lead at the Strawberry Mansion Bridge which marks 750 meters down.

"This is the most progress a crew of mine has made in six weeks, and to do what they did today was a tribute to them," he added.

The Varsity 8 comprised of Michael Fitzpatrick (cox), Andreas Mantzoukas (stroke), Matt Hanlin (7-seat), Thomas Haubrich (6-seat), Robert Protesto (5-seat), Thomas Burke (4-seat), Joe Spencer (3-seat), Michael McVeigh (2-seat), and James Harding (bow) raced hard to claim second place finishes in their heat, rep and semi to advance them into the Saturday's final.   Michigan won the race in a time of 6:12.27 followed by Florida Tech (6:15.76), Marietta (6:17.48), Temple (6:21.05), Minnesota (6:22.21) and Saint Joseph's (6:26.88).  It marked the first time since 1981 that the Owls had not claimed a gold or silver medal.

Besides the V-8, Temple placed two other boats, the Novice 4 and JV 8 into the finals.  The Novice 4 comprised of Dante Castellani (cox), Bill Gennaro (stroke), Nicholas Vlahos (3-seat), John Peterson (2-seat), and Pat White (bow) led the day off with a gold medal finish in a time of 7:29.58 followed by Pitt (7:32.87), NY Maritime (7:34.42), Ohio State (7:35.06), Army (7:53.10) and UNC (7:58.92).

The JV 8 comprised of Carmen Conicelli (cox), Logan Hoffman (stroke), Brian Campbell (7-seat), Chris Bushek (6-seat), Don Powers (5-seat), Dante Cammarata (4-seat), Pat McMahon (3-seat), Cyrus Haines (2-seat), and Mike Shisler (bow) raced hard to the line capturing a bronze medal.  Saint Joseph's won the race in 6:23.36 followed by Michigan (6:28.05), Temple (6:28.63), Army (6:28.88), Purdue (6:32.44) and Marietta (6:36.83).

The Varsity 4 of Garho Kametani (cox), Ben Carroll (stroke), Don Powers (3-seat), Jason Hart (2-seat), and Tim Malloy (bow) raced hard but was unable to advance out of their heat Friday.

The men's crew will be back in action in three weeks at the IRA Regatta on the Cooper River in Collingswood, NJ.
