5.17.05 | Baseball
SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- Senior Harry Ley singled in two runs with two outs in the ninth as Temple rallied for a 12-10 win over Seton Hall at Carroll Field on Tuesday to increase its season-high winning streak to five games. The Owls, which held an 8-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, scored two runs in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to recover from a 10-8 deficit. Every TU batter recorded a base-hit in the 13-hit effort and senior Pete Colon socked his 11th homerun of the season.
Trailing 10-8 going into the top of the eighth inning, the Owls (16-31) tied the score and could have taken the lead but left the bases loaded. Senior Gene Burpoe singled with one out and classmate Justin Cooper reached base on an error. Junior Jason Adamek pinch-ran for Burpoe and Ley singled to load the bases.
A single from senior Jason Connor scored one run and classmate Mike Weckenman followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 10-10. Colon was intentionally walked to reload the bases but the Owls could not plate the go-ahead run.
Junior Tim Andrel, who earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief, sent the Pirates down in order in the eighth. The game appeared to be headed into extra innings as Pete VanderBout retired the first two TU batters but Adamek singled to keep the inning alive. Cooper then walked and the pair stole second and third, respectively, with Ley at the plate. The move worked, as Ley proceeded to single up-the-middle to score two runs and give Temple a 12-10 lead.
Junior Tim Foulkrod came in for the bottom of the ninth and picked up his second career save. The marathon game lasted 3:40 as the two teams combined for 22 runs and 28 hits.
Seton Hall (15-33) took a 2-0 lead in the third off freshman starter Tom Dolan but the Cherry and White scored eight runs over the next two innings to take an 8-2 advantage. A Colon three-run homer in the fourth put the Owls on top and in the fifth, Burpoe reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cooper, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a wild pitch.
The Owls exploded for four runs in the sixth on an RBI-single by freshman Frank Nunan, a Burpoe sacrifice fly, and a two-run triple from Cooper.
Dolan, the reigning A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week, was cruising entering the sixth and even recorded the first two outs of the inning before the floodgates opened. SHU ended up scoring seven runs in the inning off Dolan and freshman Eric Fritz before Andrel (1-0) came in for the elusive third out. When the dust had settled, Seton Hall held a 9-8 lead.
The Pirates added a run in the seventh, but Temple then scored two each in the eighth and ninth to earn a hard-fought victory.
Ley, Connor and sophomore Dan Brady all had a pair of hits for TU.
VandenBout (0-3) suffered the loss for Seton Hall.
Temple hosts George Washington (36-16, 15-6 A-10) in its final series of the season beginning on Thursday. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday and a single nine-inning game on Friday. All games begin at noon at Ambler Field.
