5.2.05 | Baseball
AMBLER, PA -- Fordham scored six runs in the fifth inning and held off Temple to complete the series sweep with a 8-7 victory on Monday at Ambler Field. Freshman Frank Nunan went 3-for-4 with a double while senior Matt Lafferty had two hits and drove in two runs for TU. Sophomore Chris McCafferty pitched five innings of relief and allowed only one earned run.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the second, the Owls (10-27, 3-12 A-10) answered back with a four spot in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Nunan doubled home Lafferty, who had walked, for the first run of the inning. Senior Gene Burpoe also walked and classmate Justin Cooper singled to plate Nunan. Senior Harry Ley then roped a two-run double to left-center to give TU a 4-2 lead.
The hosts added a single run in the third on a Lafferty RBI single to give freshman starter Tom Dolan a 5-2 advantage. The southpaw was rolling for four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth. With a light drizzle beginning to fall, the Rams (29-15, 13-5) sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning and pounded six hits to chase Dolan. When the dust had settled, Fordham had an 8-5 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.
The skies cleared in Ambler and Temple scored a run each in the sixth and seventh innings. Nunan singled with one out and Burpoe reached on an error, sending Nunan to third. The pair executed a double steal to perfection for the Owls' sixth run. Senior Jason Connor singled to left but Burpoe was thrown out trying to score.
Lafferty ripped a RBI-single to score sophomore Dan Brady in the seventh to bring TU within 8-7. The Owls went down in order in the eighth and ninth to fall to 2-14 this season at Ambler Field.
Javier Martinez (4-4) picked up the win and struck out six in five innings. Craig Tschernedikov earned the rare four inning save for the Rams. Dolan (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs in four innings pitched.
The Owls host Lafayette tomorrow in a non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m. at Ambler Field.
