WECKENMAN SIGNS WITH GRAYS OF CAN-AM LEAGUE

PHILADELPHIA -- Former Temple baseball player Mike Weckenman has signed a free-agent contract with the Grays of Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball (Can-Am League), the team announced this week. Weckenman pitched two innings in the team's 10-8 loss to the Elmira Pioneers on Sunday.
Weckenman, who split time between first base and the mound for TU, finished the collegiate season with a 3-2 record and a 5.07 ERA in 49.2 innings pitched. He struck out 40 batters and walked 29 in his first full season as a pitcher.
With a fastball that is consistently in the high 80s and a sharp breaking curveball, Weckenman made the switch from third-base to focus on pitching. He fanned 11 batters in a 5-4 loss to Saint Joseph's on April 23, a game in which the Richboro, Pa. native took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
The team's Co-MVP, Weckenman batted .302 with 18 doubles, four homeruns and 29 RBI. His 18 doubles led the team and were second in the Atlantic 10.
The Grays (16-15) are playing their inaugural season in the independent Can-Am League and will play all of their games on the road. At a league meeting on April 27, the league's board of directors voted to terminate the membership of the Bangor Lumberjacks and voted that the league would operate an eighth team as a road team for the 2005 season.
Two more former Temple players, Greg Powell and Al Roach are also currently playing professional baseball. Powell '01 is with the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League and Roach '04 is on the disabled list for the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League.
Powell is tied for the third in the Atlantic League wins with six and has an ERA of 4.57 in 41.1 innings pitched. Roach appeared in six games before being sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Temple finished its season with a 17-33 record and an 8-16 mark in the Atlantic 10.
