FENCING ASSISTANT COACH BRADLEY BAKER FINISHES FIRST AT 2005 US FENCING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

SACRAMENTO, CA-Temple fencing assistant coach Bradley Baker took first place in the Division IA Men's Sabre Championship at the 2005 United States Fencing National Championships, held in Sacramento, Calif. from July 1st through July 10th. Baker ranked number one out of 61 competitors, winning the gold medal bout 15-14 over Alexander Diacou from New York City. Carlton Henry of New York City and Robert Ziechmann of North Carolina tied for third place in the event.

Baker, no stranger to placing well in competition, was the 2000 New England Division Men's Epée Champion and placed third at the 2003 North Atlantic Section Epée Championships. Also in 2003, Baker finished fifth at the Division IA National Sabre Championships and was a quarterfinalist in the Division I Championships. In 2004, Baker won the New England Division Sabre Championship and finished second at the North Atlantic Sectional Sabre Championships.

In addition to Baker, Temple was well represented at the US Fencing National Championships by sophomore foilist Samantha Myles and incoming recruit Nina Gernes. Myles and Gernes finished 19th and 10th, respectively, in the Division II Women's Foil Championships, and 30th and 38th, respectively, in the Division IA Women's Foil Event.

The US Fencing National Championships hosts a myriad of events ranging from youth events to veteran events in all three weapons. More information regarding the National Championships as well as results from the competition can be found at www.usfencing.org.
