FOUR UNDEFEATED FENCERS LEAD THE WAY FOR THE OWLS' PERFECT OUTING

PHILADELPHIA--Just a day after head coach Nikki Franke set a career milestone of 500 wins, Temple fencing was back in action at Penn for the second day of the Philadelphia Invitational Multi-Meet. The team went 3-0 on the day, led by four undefeated foilists (Jenna Remmert, Nina Gernes, Sabrina Shapiro and Samantha Myles).

The cherry and white defeated North Carolina (19-8), Rutgers (16-11) and Haverford (22-5). Coach Brad Baker said, "We could definitely see our fencers putting into action what they learned from yesterday's meets."

The foil squad set the precedent for the overall team. The squad's record for the day was 26-1 with 4 fencers walking away with an unbeaten records. The undefeated foilists included senior and team captain Jenna Remmert (9-0), freshman Nina Gernes (4-0), freshman Sabrina Shapiro (4-0) and sophomore Samantha Myles (5-0). Senior Maryanne Forsythe added a strong 4-1 record to the impressive foil performance.

The epee squad was led by sophomore Marla Nacey who contributed an 8-1 finish. Fellow weapon-mate Brianna Ferrara went 6-3 and newcomer Kaitlyn Uckert finished 4-5.

Both sophomore Kristine Jones and freshman Ashlee Phillips concluded with a 5-4 finish. Senior Keri Ecker finished 3-6.

 

After its first meet, the team's season record stands at 6-2.

The Owls will compete next this weekend at the Penn State Invitational.
