ASJES NAMED A-10'S TOP NEWCOMER BY BASEBALL AMERICA

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore pitcher Arshwin Asjes, a mid-year transfer from Gloucester County College, was named the Atlantic 10's Top Newcomer by Baseball America in the publication's annual college preview. The Willemstad, Curacao native was drafted in the 34th round of the 2005 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians after leading the Roadrunners to the NJCAA National Championship.
Asjes went 8-2 with a 3.25 ERA last season for new Temple head coach Rob Valli at GCC. He is the first Temple player to be drafted prior to arriving on North Broad Street since Craig Munroe, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 46th round in the 1996 MLB Draft.
The preseason polls predict that the Cherry and White will have an uphill battle to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament, held May 24-27 at Fordham's Houlihan Park. The league's coaches voted the Owls 12th out of 14 teams, while Baseball America picked Temple fifth in the now defunct A-10 East Division. The conference, which is now the largest in Division I baseball with 14 teams, has gone to one division for the first time since 2001.
TU opens its season at LSU on February 24-26. The Tigers are ranked as high as 15th in the country by Collegiate Baseball and the National College Baseball Writers Association.
