Kristen Howell Wins Epee Title At Temple Open

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple fencing team started the season off with a strong performance at the 27th Annual Temple Open. The women's portion provided fierce and tight competition. The Temple open continues Sunday with men's fencing competiton.
The Owls freshman class began their collegiate careers off impressively with four newcomers reaching the finals. Temple assistant coach Brad Baker said the freshman had a "good introduction to collegiate fencing and a whole new group of competition." Baker also noted that he and head coach Nikki Franke are "happy with the level of team spirit. The girls were supporting each other from 8:00 a.m. through 7:30 p.m."
The Epee Squad also had a strong showing at the Temple Open with freshman Kristin Howell bringing home the gold medal as the women's Epee Champion in her first collegiate competition. Sophomore Melissa Forsythe tied for third with junior Brianna Ferrera placing seventh.
The Foil Squad had four fencers reach the finals. Freshman Melissa Parker led the way with a second place finish. Junior Samantha Myles finished tied for third place while sophomore Nina Gernesova placed fifth and freshman Meredith Bratton began her career with a sixth place finish.
Two freshmen led the way for the Temple Sabre Squad. Christie Griffith tied for third while Sara Haase finished eighth.
The Temple fencing team next competes at the Penn State Open on November 4.
