Temple Stays Perfect in Big Five Play With 68-49 Win Over Penn

Philadelphia, Pa- Kamesha Hairston was a one-woman scoring machine, as the senior All-American candidate netted 25 points to lead Temple to a 68-49 victory over Penn on Friday night at the Palestra. Lady Comfort also scored in double figures with 11 points and a game-high eight boards. Temple improves to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in Big Five play, while Penn falls to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in city series play.

Temple went on a 4-0 run to begin the game but a trey by Lauren Pears at 17:36 and a lay-in by Joey Rhoads made it 5-4 just a minute later. The Quakers continued to have a slight one-point edge due to a poor shooting percentage and multiple turnovers by the Owls. TU began to pick it up by the 11 minute mark and went on a 10-2 run to make it 18-12 at 8:25. Penn went on a 8-0 run to tie the game at 20 with just under five minutes to go but the Owls responded with a 6-0 run of their own to make it 26-20 just a minute later. Temple continued to roll, behind 14 points from Hairston and took a 30-24 lead at the break.

Temple started off the half slowly, failing to get its first field goal until Hairston sank a jumper at 16:52. The Owls slowly built a 12 point lead (42-40) at 14:14. As the game began to get physical, Temple found success at the free throw line and continued to hold the 12-point advantage. The Quakers continued to fight but couldn't get any closer than nine points as Lady Comfort took over. Comfort netted seven straight points to help the Owls increase their lead by as much as 19 (68-49) with 15 seconds remaining.

Shenita Landry dished a career-high five assists to go along with her six rebounds. Jasmine Stone contributed seven points and seven rebounds. The Owls finished with a 52.8 shooting percentage after making at least 50% of their shots in each half.

Rhoads led Penn with 15 points and five assists.

Temple next travels to Florida for a match-up with the Gators on January 2 at 3:30 p.m.
